In order to strengthen the implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions, as well as the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) and the Minamata Convention, there is a need to expand the number and diversity of trained, confident and willing chairs for the various meetings of these conventions. This includes regular meetings such as the Conferences of the Parties, International Conference on Chemical Management, subsidiary bodies such as the Chemical Review Committee of the Rotterdam Convention, Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee of the Stockholm Convention, Open-ended Working Group and Implementation and Compliance Committee, of the Basel Convention, contact and drafting groups, as well as ad hoc meetings such as the Simultaneous Extraordinary Meetings of the Conference of the Parties.The pilot training session on enhancing chairing skills for meetings of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions took place on 3-4 March 2014 in Switzerland. It brought together 17 participants from countries that are parties to the BRS conventions. A training manual was developed to support future chairs in this important task.Outcome: The training was successfully completed in Berlin, Germany by 23 participants from the following countries: Argentina, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Egypt, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, India, Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Latvia Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Nepal, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, Switzerland, Thailand, Uruguay and Vietnam. The training was held on 1-3 February 2017 and addressed key institutions and actors of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions as well as the Minamata Convention and SAICM.Guided by the regional experts, the participants engaged in a wide range of panel discussions and simulation exercises, which helped them learn and practice how to effectively chair intergovernmental meetings and guide them towards agreeable outcomes. The panel discussions focused on the basic principles of chairing and managing contact group discussions. The simulation exercises provided an opportunity for participants to chair different types of meetings, from a plenary and subsidiary bodies meetings to the contact groups meetings, also covering various issues under the BRS Conventions and Minamata Convention.Organizers: This workshop is organized by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions with support from the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for Central Europe in Bratislava.
