Agriculture is among the three most hazardous sectors to work in at any age in terms of work-related illness, accidents and fatalities. Pesticide exposure represents one of most serious risks to the health of workers and their families in rural areas. Not everyone is equally exposed to the risks of pesticides for biological but also for social and economic reasons. Some groups of workers are even more at risk and vulnerable, being often prone to abuse of a myriad of human rights and forced to choose between their health and their income. This situation can be even more serious in rural areas, where informal sector is widespread, workers are poorly covered by labour law and personal protective equipment and health care are limited.
