Chemicals and Waste

Definition(s)

The destiny of any chemical, biological substance or pollutant after release into the environment (Source: NAL). For example environmental fate provides an indication of what happens to a pesticide once it enters the environment, as well as likely exposure levels for non-target organisms. Evaluation of the data makes it possible to determine the behaviour of a pesticide in soil, water and air, the potential for its uptake by plants or animals, and the potential for bioaccumulation in organisms.
